The personal documentary Bezness as Usual is Dutch film maker Alex Pitstra's reconstruction of his very complex multicultural family history. His parents met in Tunisia, married and lived in the Netherlands and split up when he was still a toddler. His father left the country and the two were out of touch for about twenty years. For many years, the film maker renounced his multicultural background, as well as the feeling that something was missing from his life. Meeting his father again at the age of 25 started a process of coming to terms with these parts of himself.

In an attempt to learn more about the unknown aspects of his background, the documentary shows him travelling all around Western-Europe and Tunisia. Along the way, he uncovers lots of information that allows him to understand more about his own confused sense of identity and cultural differences in general. He also meets several like-minded spirits, who can understand his complicated situation from their own personal experience of growing up in between cultures and being out of touch with part of their roots. They become a very important and valuable part of his development towards becoming more at ease with his mixed cultural origins and allow him to find a stronger position in life in general.

This Facebook community was started to complement the documentary, and to encourage discussions about what it is like to navigate between the very different cultures that influence your sense of self.
