Per 1 januari 2009 zijn de openbare bibliotheken van Alkmaar, Heerhugowaard en Castricum gefuseerd tot de Bibliotheek Kennemerwaard. Op 1 juli 2008 is de Stichting Bibliotheek Kennemerwaard opgericht. Het bestuur wordt gevormd door een Raad van Toezicht. Directeur van de basisbibliotheek is Erna Winters. Op 1 januari 2012 is de bibliotheek van Bergen toegetreden tot Bibliotheek Kennemerwaard.
