THE UPCYCLE is a young community/business/family started by Hidde van der Straaten and Lodewijk Bosman. The Upcycle is specialized in designing retro bicycles and other products by using parts of different old non-used bicycles.

Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value, and that's exactly what we do! THE UPCYCLE cares about everybody, and strives to develop craftsmenship for our family at the social workplaces.

In Holland a lot of old bicycles are taken from train stations or other big bicycle parking racks by the municipality. When the bicycles do not get picked up by the owner they are destroyed (only in Amsterdam 30.000 per year) or sometimes sold to second hand shops. Instead of just refurbishing these old bikes, The Upcycle will use parts (especially focussing on the frame) of these different abandoned bicycles to design a new unique bicycle. The added value can be found in the new parts that are used, the unique design and the eco friendly and social production method. Next to the production of bicycles, we focus on other kinds of products that can be upcycled from old non-used bicycles (chairs, jewellery, lighting etc.), this product line is called the Upcycle Family.
